Testimonial Thursday

It's April 26 and time for another testimonial from one of our students.  Today, Amie from Illinois writes, "I loved being able to work at my own pace.  Summer school was not an option for me because I was out of the country.  The American School gave me the opportunity to enhance my educational path."  We thank Amie for her kind words.  Currently our Instruction department is very busy trying to grade exams as quickly as possible so that students can pass our courses and avoid summer school.  Still, we know some students will need to take summer school courses in order to be promoted to the next grade or even graduate.  If your school district does not offer the courses you need, chances are we do.  You can enroll in one or more of our courses through our Independent Study program.  If you'd like more information, simply visit any time.  We would love to have you as one of our students!

American School to Add New Enrollment Applications for Foreign Students

In order to better serve our students who live in foreign countries, the American School will soon be adding new enrollment applications to our Web site.  For your convenience, these new enrollment applications will be available on our enrollment pages through separate, clearly-marked links.  We are grateful to have students not only in the 50 states but also in several countries around the world, and we hope these new enrollment applications get your American School experience off to a great start!

American School Celebrates Earth Day

Earth Day celebrated its 42nd anniversary over the weekend.  Even though the American School was closed on April 22 because Earth Day fell on a Sunday, we do our part to protect the environment every day.  Several years ago, the American School started a massive paper recycling program, and we also have an aluminum can recycling program.  Soon, you might be able to save some paper yourself when you take one of our online courses.  Currently we have seven online courses, but later this year we hope to offer a much bigger variety of courses online.  For more information on what you can do to make every day Earth Day, visit

It’s Talk Like Shakespeare Day!

It's April 23, the birthday of William Shakespeare.  You can read some of his works in our British Literature course, which is described at  The course with a CD that contains recordings of actors performing Shakespeare's plays.  Literature 4, which is described at, gives you the opportunity to read Twelfth Night.  If you want to do more than read Shakespeare, you can talk like him too.  Visit to learn more!

April 16 Birthday: Gary R. Masterton

It's April 16, and American School President Gary R. Masterton celebrates a birthday today.  During his tenure, the American School has made great strides in expanding its online presence.  We revamped our Web site, added the Online Student Center, and more recently began offering online courses.  Even this blog is something that started during his time in office!  In the future, you can look for more online initiatives from the American School, including a new online course that will be ready very soon!

American School to Attend Local ISCA Conference

The American School will attend the local ISCA (Illinois School Counselor Association) conference Friday, April 20, at the Doubletree Hotel in suburban Skokie.  We are proud to work with so many high schools in the state of Illinois, those close to home and those we met at the downstate ISCA conference a week earlier.  These conventions are not the only places we meet counselors face-to-face.  If you're a counselor working at a school within 50 miles of the American School and would like one of our representatives to visit your school, send an e-mail to, and we will be happy to schedule a visit to your school either now or at the beginning of the 2012-13 school year.  Similarly, if you are a prospective or current American School student living in or visiting the Chicago area and would like a tour of our building, stop by during normal business hours or send an e-mail to to schedule an appointment.  Even though we are a distance learning school, we like seeing students, parents and counselors in person!
