American School Celebrates National Distance Learning Week

We're right in the middle of National Distance Learning Week, and all of us at the American School are grateful to have so many students who choose to work toward their high school diplomas through distance learning.  For much of our existence, we equated distance learning with learning via correspondence.  As times have changed, we've evolved and now offer several different online learning options.  Early in 2014 we plan to release online exams in eight additional paper-based courses, and we also hope to greatly expand our online courses in the new year.  At the same time, we are committed to offering a wide array of paper-based courses for those students who are more comfortable learning that way.  Whatever your favorite distance learning method is, the American School has the courses you need at a cost you can afford!

American School to Attend ISCA Conference

The American School will exhibit at the Indiana School Counselor Association Conference on November 14-15 at the Indianapolis Marriott East. The conference will provide an opportunity for school counselors in Indiana to meet with American School personnel and learn how the American School can benefit their students. Counselors can visit the American School at table 30 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Thursday, November 14, and from 7:30 a.m.-11 a.m. on Friday, November 15.  We've attended this conference for many years now and always enjoy meeting counselors from the Hoosier State.  The ISCA Conference will also close out the American School's 2013 convention schedule, but the 2014 calendar already is getting filled up with conventions across the country.  We'll have more details after the first of the year.

Today’s Special Occasion: Veterans Day

On Veterans Day, the American School wishes to thank all of our veterans and those currently in the Armed Forces for their dedicated service to our country.  We are always proud to include the word "American" in our name, but especially so on days like today!

Sharon Maco Celebrates 45 Years of Full-Time Employment

If you read the All American newsletter, you know that in most issues we highlight full-time employees who reach milestone anniversaries.  Even if we profile a handful of them per issue, their combined service often doesn’t surpass the 45 years Sharon Maco has worked at the American School.  A member of the Collections Department, Sharon is currently the longest-tenured full-time employee, though long-serving employees are nothing new to the American School.  In the past, we have had several employees work full-time for upwards of 40, 50 or even 60 years, and we are pleased to have Sharon in that group.  We congratulate her for her many years of dedicated service to the School and our students and wish her the best in the rest of her American School career.

Today’s Special Occasion: Flu Shot Day

It's November 7, and today is a very special day at the American School because our employees are receiving their annual flu shots.  Each year we welcome the Respiratory Health Association to adminster the vaccinations, and their presence is much appreciated.  We do our best to make sure our employees stay healthy throughout the year, but especially in winter when the flu is prevalent.  That's why today's immunizations are so important.  They help ensure that we will be fully staffed throughout flu season, which is a great benefit to our students.  Because our employees are receiving their annual injections today, there should be no delay in the grading and returning of your exams during the winter months.  If you're curious about the flu and other contagious diseases, there is a section on them in our Physiology and Health course.  Give us a shot and enroll today!

Today’s Birthday: Arne Duncan

It's November 6, and United States Secretary of Education Arne Duncan turns 49 years old today.  The Department of Education Web site is a good place to go for national education news as well as other educational resources.  A list of other helpful sites, particularly sites that can assist you with homework, may be found in our Online Student Center, and often we will post information from other sites on our Facebook and Twitter pages as well.  The purpose of us recommending different sites and posting information from other sites is to inform you so that you make the best educational decisions for you and your family.

American School Building Tours Available

People are often surprised to learn that they can come into the American School's building at virtually any time and receive a tour of the school.  Just yesterday a recent graduate from Texas and his father stopped by and saw first-hand how the American School operates.  They walked through the Admissions, Student Service, Shipping, Curriculum and Instruction Departments and saw where applications are processed, phone calls and emails are answered, books are shipped, courses are created, exams are graded and much more.  They also visited our library and learned a little bit about the American School's long and illustrious history.  If you're a student or graduate or are thinking about enrolling and would like to see how the American School works while you're in the Chicago area, we'd be happy to show you around.  Simply contact our Public Relations Department via phone or email to make an appointment.  Tours are available during regular business hours, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Method Test Prep Monday

On this first Monday in November, we'll highlight our partnership with Method Test Prep.  Method Test Prep's latest SAT Advantage Classes are beginning tonight.  When you enroll in these classes or any other teacher-led course, use the code AMERICAN to receive a discount off your order.  You can enroll for SAT mini-classes or ACT mini-classes so that you can avoid common mistakes students make on either exam.  We are proud of our partnership with Method Test Prep and hope you find it useful as you prepare to take the college admissions exam of your choice.

American School to Attend All Ohio Counselors Conference

The American School will exhibit at the All Ohio Counselors Conference on November 6-8 at the Hilton Easton in Columbus. The conference will provide an opportunity for school counselors in Ohio to meet with American School personnel and learn how the American School can benefit their students. Counselors can visit the American School at table 7 from 6-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 6; 8 a.m.-6 p.m. on Thursday, November 7; and from 8 a.m.-12 noon on Friday, November 8.  We have had a great relationship with counselors and schools in Ohio, and we are confident our presence at this conference will strengthen existing relationships as well as create new ones.
