American School Enjoys Successful Summer Convention Season

If you're a regular blog reader, you know that we've been on the road quite a bit this spring and summer.  Since June 1, we've visited homeschool conventions in Virginia, California, Washington, Arizona, Georgia and Texas and attended a national school counselor convention in Florida.  We enjoyed meeting everyone who stopped by our booth, whether they were students, parents or counselors who currently use our courses, or students, parents or counselors who were interested in learning more about us with plans to use our courses in the future.  We can honestly say that this was one of the best convention seasons in recent memory.  As much as we enjoy meeting people in person at shows across the country, it's good to be home for a while and attend to matters here, so that is what we'll be doing for all of August and the better parts of September and October.  Check back this fall to see where we're headed next!

American School Releases New Full-Unit Business Math Course

In yesterday's blog, we promised to release more paper-based and online courses later this year, and it's taken us just 24 hours to live up to that promise.  Today we're proud to release a new full-unit Business Math course which replaces the previous half-unit course.  Students in this new course will learn to make calculations involving personal income, use various bank accounts and products, apply math and knowledge to shopping, work with various types of insurance and investments, and receive some pointers on how to start, manage and grow a business.  If you believe Business Math makes "cents" for you and your future plans, then we encourage you to enroll today or contact us to add it to your existing curriculum.  ***Please note that students who  were scheduled to take the previous half-unit Business Math course will receive a letter detailing options for taking the first semester of the new course or adding the entire full-unit course to their curriculum.***

American School to Attend Southeast Homeschool Expo

American School is pleased to be an exhibitor at the Southeast Homeschool Expo July 25-26 at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta.  Students and parents who attend one of the largest homeschool conventions in the region are invited to stop by booth 902 on Friday from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.  At our booth we'll have plenty of information packets and enrollment applications and a variety of promotional items to give away, and we'll also sign your scavenger hunt card so that you can win prizes awarded by the convention itself.

This convention and the THSC convention featured in yesterday's blog are two of our biggest events of the year, so big in fact that the blog is going to take a few days off to devote full attention to these two events, which are our last conventions for awhile.  Don't worry if you haven't seen us this spring or summer, though.  We'll be on the road again this fall, and this blog and our Facebook and Twitter pages will be here to tell you where we're headed next.

Flashback Friday

In our latest installment of Flashback Friday, we're going back to Summer 1974, when we awarded 22 scholarships to deserving graduates.  One of the scholarship committee members that year was John Kemp, and we are proud to say that he hasn't missed a scholarship committee meeting since.  When the July-August All American comes out in a few weeks and you read about this year's scholarship winners, you'll also see a picture of John Kemp and the rest of this year's scholarship committee.  We thank him for his 40 years of service to American School and our students and graduates.

News For Our Facebook Fans

Our Facebook page has consistently seen an increase in the number of fans, and for that we are grateful.  From time to time, however, it is good to remind all of our Facebook fans of a few things so that our Facebook page can be kind of informative place we want it to be.

First, although it may seem obvious to many of you, American School is located in Lansing, Illinois and offers accredited high school courses and diploma programs through distance learning methods.  We do not offer in-person classes, nor do we offer classes so that residents of foreign countries can receive a visa to come to the United States.  If you fall in either of the latter two categories, we appreciate your interest, but American School is not the best education option for you, and liking our page may clutter up your newsfeed.

Second, in order to keep the page safe for everyone, we reserve the right to remove posts if deemed to be offensive material or an advertisement. We also reserve the right to permanently ban users who post such material.  Please know that we do not consider questions or complaints to be offensive material unless you use profanity when making such a comment.  Although contacting us directly by using the email addresses or phone numbers listed in the Online Student Center is the best and safest way to receive a quick response, we will reply to your comment on Facebook and either answer your question or refer you to the proper department if you have a specific student account issue.

Thank you for your cooperation in keeping Facebook page safe for all those who visit.

Today’s Special Occasion: MLB All-Star Game

If you read last Friday's blog entry, you know that the American School Blog celebrated its 8th birthday just four days ago.  The subject of the very our very first blog entry was the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, which was being played that night in Pittsburgh.  Although we've added many online courses and made other positive changes since our first blog was published, some of the other themes of our first blog entry remain the same.  You can still become an academic all-star after you enroll with us.  That's because we allow students to work entirely at their own pace and provide students with detailed feedback from our qualified instructors.  We can't guarantee that you'll hit it out of the park on every test, but we can guarantee that through hard work and perseverance, one day you will cross home plate with your accredited high school diploma.

In the meantime, we have a fun little challenge for you.  Below are 26 Major League Baseball mascots who gathered this week at Target Field in Minneapolis, site of tonight's All-Star Game.  What four teams do not have a mascot in the picture?  Comment on our Facebook page and we'll tell you if you're right!
