American School Attends Conference on Distance Teaching and Learning

American School Assistant Principal Eve Tselepatiotis was in Madison, Wisconsin this week for the 30th annual Conference on Distance Teaching and Learning.  In addition to adding sessions herself, Eve also presented one in which she discussed successful strategies for addressing academic integrity issues with parents and students.  Although matters of academic integrity are not always easy to talk about with parents and students, American School does its best to support students and help them become better learners, in large part because of the strategies Eve discussed during her presentation.  You can learn more about our honor system and the level of academic integrity we expect from our students by going to our FAQ page.

Today’s Anniversary: Social Security

It's August 14, and on this day in 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act, which created a government pension system for retired people and others in need.  This act is perhaps the most famous of the sweeping changes FDR made during the Great Depression as part of his New Deal programs.  You can learn more about FDR, Social Security and the New Deal by taking our United States History course, which is available in online and paper-based formats.  The anniversary of the signing of the Social Security Act is a good opportunity to talk about a different kind of social security, the kind of security provided by earning an accredited high school diploma.  Over time, you'll have many more job opportunities and more financial resources than those who do not have a diploma, so enroll today and get one step closer to that kind of security for you and your family.

New Individual Subject Enrollment Application Available

American School is pleased to offer two distinct high school diploma programs as well as an independent study program which allows students at resident high schools to take individual courses to make up credit or work ahead.  We realize that there is a third group of students who do not desire our diploma nor attend a resident high school.  They simply want to enhance or supplement their existing homeschool program with one or more of our courses.  For these students, we are happy to offer a separate individual subject application that is different than our independent study enrollment application.  To avoid confusion, this individual subject application is not available on our web site, but we'd be happy to send you one if you desire to take individual courses to enhance or supplement an existing homeschool program.  Just send us an email and we'll send you a pdf version of the application.  We look forward to having you as our student!

Today’s Special Occasion: Perseid Meteor Shower

If you're a fan of science, in particular astronomy, then you might want to go outside tonight and attempt to view the Perseid Meteor Shower.  It's a good way to see science come to life and, depending on the weather in your hometown, might be a nice way to spend one of the last evenings of summer.  If you're interested in science, then take a look at our science courses and add one or more of them to your curriculum.  We have quite a variety of courses available, several of them in online formats, and look forward to adding more later this year.

Testimonial Thursday

We're back with another testimonial from one of our students.  Amanda from Washington writes, "American School is very fun and informative.  The instructors’ comments were helpful.  If I missed a question, they will tell you where to go.  The instructors encourage you to keep going all along the way.  I am glad I chose American School for my high school years.  You can trust American School to be up-to-date with all the information us students need to graduate.  American School is very honest, trustworthy, reliable, friendly, accurate and loyal to their students.  I would recommend American School to anybody.  Thank you for publishing a great curriculum we as students can count on."  We thank Amanda for those kind words, which are an accurate summary of what you can expect after you become an American School student.  Click here to enroll today!

American School Nominated for BBB Torch Award

American School is proud to be nominated for the Better Business Bureau's prestigious 2015 Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics.  We are grateful for the nomination and proud of our 79-year affiliation with the Better Business Bureau, which recently gave us A+ ratings for striving to give students and schools the best service we can.  Our A+ grade is the highest a business can receive under the BBB's new rating system, which replaces the previous 'satisfactory' or 'unsatisfactory' rating.  Letter grades are calculated by computer using a ratings formula that takes into account 17 weighted factors, the largest single factor being the company's overall complaint history with the BBB.  While we are grateful for the Torch Award nomination and A+ rating, the real beneficiaries of such honors are our students.  They not only take courses from an accredited school but also one which is committed to doing business the right away.

Method Test Prep Debuts New Web Site

Usually we give updates from our ACT-SAT partner on Method Test Prep Mondays, but when news breaks, we report it any day of the week.  Our friends at Method Test Prep recently debuted a new web site, and you can take a tour by going here.  Method Test Prep's courses and services haven't changed, but we want you to be aware of their web site's different look so that you won't be alarmed when you try to access their courses or receive more information about them before you decide to enroll.  Many students have enjoyed taking ACT or SAT prep courses through Method Test Prep, and we plan on continuing this partnership for years to come.  Visit our ACT-SAT page to learn more.

Today’s Birthday: John Venn

It's August 4, and mathematician John Venn was born 180 years ago today.  If you don't recognize his first name, you're not alone.  You're probably much more familiar with his last name and may have seen something called a Venn diagram in a math class.  A Venn diagram is graphic representation of the relationships of things in a set.  Usually it consists of two or more circles, and when it is completed properly, it will give you some very useful information, such as what items are common to all sets or what items are common to just two sets or finally what items are common to just one set.  You can learn more about Venn diagrams by taking our math courses, and once you've mastered them, they can be a valuable resource for you in all of your classes.
