Today’s Special Occasion: A Leap Second

It's June 30, and today a leap second will be added to clocks all over the world.  The link in the previous sentence contains a detailed explanation of why we're adding an extra second today, but here is a shorter version.  It doesn't take the earth exactly 365 days to go around the sun.  It's more like 365 1/4 days, which is why once every four years February 29 shows up on the calendar, but it's not exactly 365 1/4 days either.  That's why here and there we add these leap seconds.  They may make a small difference to us now, but if we didn't add them, eventually time would get messed up, and it would be scorching hot in December and freezing cold in June.  The leap second is a good reminder that even the little things mean a lot.  You may be working on something you believe to be inconsequential in a course, but every assignment, question, project and exam is important to you and your overall academic success.  Make every second count and make every question count as you work toward your American School diploma!

American School Debuts Online Exams for Automotive Systems

Earlier today online exams became available for the latest version of our paper-based Automotive Systems course.  We are happy to offer online exams in many of our paper-based courses.  This process allows students to learn in the traditional way, by reading a textbook and study guide and answering self-check test questions on paper, but take their exams in a modern way which drastically reduces turnaround time.  Visit our Online Learning page for more information on online exams for paper-based courses as well as our ever-expanding roster of online courses.

Today’s Anniversary: The Cyclone Roller Coaster

It's June 26, and on this date in 1927 the Cyclone roller coaster opened at Coney Island.  It's one of the most famous wooden roller coasters in the world, but we know that roller coasters aren't just confined to amusement parks.  Your high school career can be a roller coaster with ups and downs, courses that will appeal to you and others that don't, and exams that you will breeze through and others that will give you trouble.  That's why it's important to attend a school that can give you reliable caring student service.  Our staff is available to assist you whenever you need help, whether you need more books, have a question about your exam, can't access our online student center or an online course, need to pay a bill, or more.  Enroll today and let us help you have a smooth ride en route to your accredited high school diploma.

New Promotional Items Coming Soon!

Every time we preview a convention we mention that we'll have plenty of giveaway items available to everyone who visits our booth.  Some of you who aren't able to visit us at a convention might be wondering what these giveaway items are, and while we don't want to spoil the surprise for those people who are in fact attending a convention, we can tell you that moments ago we ordered a brand new giveaway item that will make its debut next month.  This giveaway item will replace our pen with a secret message inside that has served us well for many years.  That pen now joins our #1 keychain as retired giveaway items, but we still have three unique giveaway items at our disposal.  Check back on Thursday to see where we'll be handing them out next!

Reminder About Making Payments Online

It's our treasurer's birthday, so today is a good day to talk about money, specifically making your monthly payments online.  We are proud to offer interest-free monthly payment plans to students in our diploma programs, and making payments online is simple.  Click the yellow "Make a Payment" button on the middle right of our home page, and you'll be taken to a page where you can make your secure payment.  Please note that this payment screen is for enrolled students only.  New students should make their down payments at the time of enrollment, at which time you can decide the dollar amounts of your down payment and monthly payments.  Also, please note that you can still make monthly payments by check.  Just like we offer online and paper-based courses, we also accept online and paper-based payments.  Thank you for doing your best to pay on time, whether you use the online payment screen or send us a check in the mail.  We are grateful to have you as our student!

This Weekend’s Special Occasion: Father’s Day

This Sunday is Father's Day, and so we'd like to acknowledge all the dads who are reading this blog.  As a father, you may be the primary support for your son or daughter who is working toward his or her accredited high school diploma with us.  You could be a student yourself, taking courses to earn your diploma or simply taking a course or two for enrichment purposes.  Finally, you may be a school official who coordinates students' classes through our Independent Study Program or an American School employee who performs a variety of tasks to ensure our students do their very best.  In any case, we wish you a Happy Father's Day and thank you for everything you do!

Today’s Anniversary: The Battle of Waterloo

It's June 18, and the famous Battle of Waterloo took place 200 years ago today.  Because the battle marked the end of Napoleon's once-insurmountable power, today the term "waterloo" can refer to anything that causes someone's demise.  Not having a high school diploma should never be your waterloo.  We offer online and paper-based programs if you desire to earn our accredited diploma, and we make individual courses available if you need to recover credit or wish to enhance an existing homeschool program.  Go on the offensive and enroll today!
