Today’s Birthday: Mark Twain

It's November 30, and Mark Twain was born on this date in 1835.  He died 75 years later in 1910, and Halley's Comet passed by earth within days of his entrance into the world and his exit from it.  You probably know that Mark Twain wasn't his real name (Samuel Clemens was) and that he introduced us to characters like Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer among others.  You can read Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court after you enroll in our Literature 3: Selected American Classics course.  It's one of several high school correspondence courses that students take while they work to earn a high school diploma at home or are enrolled in our independent study high school program.  If you want to learn more about Mark Twain, a visit to the Mark Twain Museum in Hannibal, Missouri is a great place to start.  The town of Hannibal itself has Mark Twain sites throughout and sits roughly halfway between Chicago and St. Louis.  It's a great opportunity to enhance your American School experience, as are visits to museums and historic sites dedicated to other authors who are in our curriculum.

Today’s Birthday: Louisa May Alcott

It's November 29, and author Louisa May Alcott was born on this date in 1832.  She is best known for writing Little Women but also wrote a number of other novels.  American School offers a variety of English courses in which students read works from famous authors.  These English courses include online high school courses, high school correspondence courses and online middle school courses, and we plan on adding middle school correspondence courses next year.  We are pleased to offer quality English courses in our accredited middle school program and accredited high school program and look forward to having you as our student after you enroll

Today’s Special Occasion: Cyber Monday

It's the Monday after Thanksgiving, and in the retail world today is known as Cyber Monday because of all of the great deals people find online.  It seems like today is the perfect day to mention our online high school diploma program which consists of 18 accredited online high school courses or our accredited middle school program which consists of 5 online middle school courses per year.  These online courses have been popular since we started making them available, and we plan to have even more online courses in 2017.  Since Cyber Monday is about getting great deals too, it's a good occasion to remind you that, as a non-profit institution, we keep costs to a minimum.  Enroll today and have plenty of money left over for your other holiday shopping!

Fall All American Newsletter Available

The Fall 2016 All American newsletter is now available on this page and on our Community page.  While you're there you can access archived copies of the All American and learn more about your distance education high school and middle school.  In the coming year, the All American will be published quarterly, but we want to include more student news than ever before.  We want to profile past and present students who have chosen to earn a high school diploma at home with us.  Feel free to contact us and share your story.  We'd be happy to feature you!

American School Announces Thanksgiving Schedule

American School will be closed Thursday, November 24, and Friday, November 25, for the Thanksgiving holiday.  We will reopen with our regular business hours on Monday, November 28.  We are thankful for our students who are in our general high school program or college preparatory program and will ultimately earn their diplomas from American School.  We are also thankful for those students in our independent study high school program which offers individual courses for credit recovery and for those students who take individual courses with us to enrich an existing homeschool program.  Whatever your reason for becoming our students, we're glad you did, and we wish you and your families a good weekend.

Today’s Anniversary: The State of North Carolina

It's November 21, and on this date in 1789, North Carolina became the 12th member of the United States.  North Carolina is home to a great college basketball program that makes appearances in this blog from time to time, but more importantly the Tar Heel State is home to many American School students.  They're not bedeviled by our accredited high school program which consists of paper-based or online high school courses, nor are younger students apprehensive of our accredited middle school program consisting of online middle school courses.  We give students in all 50 states excellent curriculum and caring student service, all at a reasonable cost to them and their families.  Today can be an anniversary for you as well if you enroll and become our student today.

Today’s Anniversary: Time Zones

It's November 18, and on this day in 1883, time zones were established across the continental United States.  We're happy to have students taking online high school courses, online middle school courses and high school correspondence courses all throughout this great land of ours.  Since we are located near Chicago, we are in the Central time zone, so we are open from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Central time each day.  If those hours are not convenient for you, you can email us 24-7 no matter where you live and expect a reply within one business day.  We are happy you took the time to read today's blog, and please know that we always make time to help our students and graduates!

Reminder About Transcripts and Duplicate Diplomas

Today we have a reminder about transcripts and duplicate diplomas.  Many students will email us asking how they can get transcripts or duplicate diplomas, and while we are happy to assist students via email, you don't have to email us to find the answers to those questions and others.  We have a Frequently Asked Questions page where we tell students how to request transcripts and duplicate diplomas as well as answer some of the questions we receive the most.  Please take a look at that page if you have questions about our online high school courses, high school correspondence courses and online middle school courses and more.  You'll likely find your answer there.

New All American Newsletter Coming Soon

It's been a while since we've published a new All American newsletter, but that's about to change.  Within the week, we'll have the fall edition available for you.  In it, you'll read about our annual meeting, see pictures of staff members celebrating milestone anniversaries, and much more.  We're always looking to spotlight our students and graduates, so if you are doing something interesting besides taking our online middle school courses, online high school courses and high school correspondence courses, let us know.  We'd be happy to feature you in an upcoming issue!

American School to Attend NYSSCA Conference

American School will make its final convention appearance of 2016 this weekend in Tarrytown, New York.  For the first time, we're exhibiting at the New York State School Counselor Association Annual Conference.  We'll be at the Doubletree Hotel in Tarrytown on November 18 from 7 a.m to 6 p.m. and November 19 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and look forward to meeting counselors from the Empire State.  Certainly we'll be discussing our independent study high school program with high school correspondence courses and accredited online high school courses, but we'll also have information about our new accredited middle school program available.  This year we have visited conventions in all corners of the United States, and we look forward to going out and meeting you in 2017.  Keep checking this blog and our Facebook and Twitter pages for all of our latest news.
