Today’s Special Occasion: Gary Masterton’s Last Day

Today marks the end of an era at American School as it is Gary R. Masterton's last day as American School President.  During his decade in office, American School has gone from a school that only offered a correspondence high school diploma to one that also offers an online high school diploma, online middle school courses and other online services including our online student center and this blog that you read most weekdays.  We're grateful for Gary's service and leadership and wish him and his family the best as he retires from American School after more than 30 years of full-time service to our students.  We'll miss you!

Today’s Anniversary: The State of Texas

It's December 29, and Texas became a state on this date in 1845.  They say that everything is bigger in Texas, and when it comes to American School convention appearances in 2017, that's true.  We're going to more conventions in Texas than any other state as we have four already scheduled with the possibility of others being added at a later date.  We do our best to attend the best and biggest shows possible all throughout the United States.  It's not uncommon for us to attend shows in Washington, California, Florida, New York and everywhere in between.  That's because people all over the country are interested in our online high school courses, high school correspondence courses and online middle school courses.  We're accredited by three reputable accrediting bodies, so no matter where you live, you can be assured that our courses are valid.  We also provide personalized customer service and charge affordable tuition with payment plans available.  Enroll today and let us help you feel like a Lone Star wherever you are as you earn a high school diploma at home.

Today’s Anniversary: The State of Iowa

It's December 28, and Iowa became a state on this date in 1846.  It's not uncommon for us to meet some of our neighbors to the west at the conventions we attend each year.  The 2017 convention slate consists of return trips to many conventions and initial appearances at other events.  We'll be going to every corner of the continental United States promoting our accredited high school courses and online middle school courses.  We're happy to offer a high school diploma adults and children may complete, and we're also proud to offer individual courses for credit recovery or enrichment purposes.  Keep checking this blog for our first convention stops of 2017, and be sure to stop by our booth if we're going to a city near you.  We'd be happy to meet you!

Today’s Anniversary: Charles Darwin and the HMS Beagle

It's December 27, and on this date in 1831, Charles Darwin began his journey aboard the HMS Beagle.  It was on this trip that Darwin began to formulate his famous theory of evolution.  We know that some students and their families have concerns about studying evolution.  That's why we have alternate units available for students in our various Biology courses, especially the paper-based Biology course.  We do not force students to take entire accredited online high school courses or high school correspondence courses which conflict with their religious beliefs.  This is one of the many accommodations we make to ensure that students feel comfortable taking courses from the leader in distance education high schools and middle schools, and we'd be happy to offer you the same benefits.  Enroll today!

Enter the Make College Happen Challenge

We're happy to have students who work to earn a high school diploma at home simply for the satisfaction of obtaining one, but many of our students want to earn a correspondence high school diploma or online high school diploma and then go on to college.  The Make College Happen Challenge presented by Sallie Mae is open to students ages 14-18, and we encourage you to enter by December 31.  You could win up to $15,000 toward your college education, but at the very least you and your family will start thinking about college and how to pay for it.  Our school counselor can answer any questions you have about the college admissions process, and we ourselves are proud to offer 18 scholarships a year to deserving graduates.  More details about our 2017 scholarship competition will be available early next year.

Testimonial Thursday

Today's Testimonial Thursday features Courtney from Indiana who writes, "American School has helped me so much.  I’m getting the grades I would like on my own.  I love how I can finish a class as slow or as fast as I want.  This school gives me the hope to graduate."  We're grateful for those words, and in this season of hope, we're happy to be the school that gave Courtney and so many others the hope to graduate with an online high school diploma or a correspondence high school diploma.  Be sure to check back in 2017 for more testimonials from students like Courtney.

American School Celebrates 119th Anniversary

On December 17, 1897, American School received a charter to operate in the state of Massachusetts.  Although we moved to Illinois a few years later, we are still guided by that charter and consider December 17 our birthday.  Since we're closed tomorrow, we're celebrating a day early.  So much has changed in nearly 120 years.  Our archives contain copies of courses we used to offer to students.  They included studies that would have been useful for the careers of the day, including farming, machinery and more.  Today we offer hundreds of online high school courses, high school correspondence courses and online middle school courses, but our commitment to being the best distance education high school and middle school has not changed in more than a century.  We have big things planned for our 120th year and invite you to be a part of it.  The best birthday present you can give us is to enroll.  In return, we'll give you the accredited courses you need at a cost you can afford and provide you with caring student service as you work to earn a high school diploma at home.
