Important Notice for French 1 and French 2 Students

This blog has important information for students taking French 1 and/or French 2 among their high school correspondence courses.  Students in these courses may be unable to use the CD-ROMs included with the courses because they have a newer Mac computer or are running Windows 10 on a PC.  If you have trouble using the CD-ROMs that came with your course(s), you first can try using them on a computer that is compatible with CD-ROMs, such as a PC running Windows 8 or older or a Mac running OS 10.6 or older.  You also can switch to the online French 1 or French 2 course powered by Rosetta Stone, and the cost of that switch will either be free or $150 per course, depending on your enrollment date and previous use of accredited online high school courses.  Finally, you can continue in the paper-based course using the publisher’s online resources and a guide that our curriculum department has developed to help students use those resources.   Please email us if you have questions or concerns and we will be happy to assist you.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Today’s Birthday: The American School Facebook Page

It's December 13, and our Facebook page turns 6 years old today.  We're grateful for the thousands of people who have liked our page in the past 6 years.  We post regularly to that page and to Twitter, so check us out if you haven't done so already.  When you like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter, you'll be among the first to know about our new online high school courses and online middle school courses, and there will be more to come in 2017.  We also plan to add more high school correspondence courses and introduce middle school correspondence courses, and you'll hear about them first if you view our social media pages.  Our Facebook page is just one way we've adapted to the changing times while maintaining our reputation as one of the best distance education high schools and middle schools around.  We look forward to enhancing our legacy in 2017 and beyond.

Indiana Celebrates Bicentennial of Statehood

It's December 12, and yesterday the state of Indiana celebrated its bicentennial.  Indiana has been our neighbor since we moved to Chicagoland in the early 20th century, and many of our employees live in the Hoosier State.  More importantly, we're happy to have many Hoosiers as our students.  Some enroll in our online high school diploma program.  Others enroll in our accredited high school program and take paper-based courses.  Still others take online middle school courses as part of our accredited middle school program.  Finally, others take the best online high school courses or high school correspondence courses on an individual basis for credit recovery or enrichment.  No matter where you live, we'd be happy to have you as our student as well.  Enroll today!

Today’s Birthday: Donny Osmond

It's December 9, and Donny Osmond turns 59 years old today.  He and his sister Marie and their brothers were all American School students.  We've had more than three million students take our accredited high school courses over the years.  The Osmonds are among the most famous, but we treat all of our students as if they were celebrities because to us they are.  They get the benefits of affordable cost, innovative curriculum and caring student service as they work to earn a high school diploma at home.  Thanks in part to our new accredited middle school program, we are well on our way to educating four million students.  Join us by enrolling today!

Testimonial Thursday

It's Thursday, so let's have another testimonial from one of our students.  Today's comes from Lyubov from Wisconsin, who writes, "The study guides are a very helpful way of introducing the exam.  Also the textbooks are filled with details and aren’t hard to understand.  One thing that really caught my eye was how the people who grade my exam are very polite and helpful.  They leave correct answers by the incorrect answers.  It can’t be any better."  We thank Lyubov for those words about our high school correspondence courses.  We take pride in providing top-notch study materials and in having qualified instructors to grade our paper-based and online high school courses, as well as our online middle school courses.  You can have the same benefits after you enroll with us and become our student.

75th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor

It's December 7, and today is the 75th anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor.  Ceremonies will be held throughout the day at the site of the attacks in Hawaii, and the web site linked above has more information on Pearl Harbor and its historic sites, as well as ways for you to watch some of today's events live from wherever you may be.  If you ever travel to Hawaii, we highly recommend visiting Pearl Harbor.  More than likely, you'll hear from a survivor or a survivor's family member, so history will literally come alive for you.  For today, though, we pause to reflect upon the events of 75 years ago and remember the lives lost on that day that will live in infamy.

Today’s Special Occasion: St. Nicholas Day

It's December 6, and people around the world are celebrating St. Nicholas Day.  No matter what your religious affiliation is, we thought you'd be interested in learning more about the man who long has been considered the inspiration for Santa Claus and who is the reason why your shoes might be filled with presents this morning.  Having you enrolled in our accredited high school program, accredited middle school program, independent study high school or independent study middle school is a great gift to us, and we value each of you.  Unlike other schools, we do not take extended periods of time off during the holiday season.  In fact, we'll be here for most of the days and weeks around the holidays.  You'll find out the specifics when we post our holiday schedule soon!

Today’s Birthday: Martin Van Buren

It's December 5 and Martin Van Buren was born on this date in 1782.  He was the 8th President of the United States and is perhaps best known for his interesting facial hair and being the inspiration for a made-up street gang on a popular television show in the 1990s.  In reality, he was quite a politician and gave most of his adult life in public service to this country.  The United States wasn't even a century old when Martin Van Buren became its 8th leader, but American School won't get its 8th President until its 120th year.  That's a testimony to our stability and stature as a leading distance education high school and middle school.  You can expect us to add more online high school courses and online middle school courses next year, and we're hoping to add paper-based courses to our accredited middle school program as well.  2017 will be an exciting year for us.  Keep checking this blog for all of our latest news!

Today’s Anniversary: The Environmental Protection Agency

It's December 2, and the Environmental Protection Agency began operations on this date in 1970.  We have online and paper-based Environmental Science courses that you can take if you are interested in learning about some of the issues faced by the EPA on a daily basis.  We're proud to offer accredited high school courses in both online and paper-based formats.  Some courses, like Environmental Science, are offered in both formats.  For other disciplines, you have your choice of online high school courses or high school correspondence courses.  Next year we'll have paper-based middle school courses to go along with the online middle school courses that have been popular so far in 2016.  It's our way of ensuring that you take the courses you want in the way that you want them.  Get started by enrolling today!
