Today’s Special Occasion: Fat Tuesday

It's February 28, and today is Fat Tuesday.  Many of us will be having paczki, but while we fatten up on those, we encourage you to fatten up your mind instead of your waistline.  We offer accredited online high school courses and online middle school courses as well as accredited high school correspondence courses.  You may take them individually as part of an independent study high school program or to enrich an existing homeschool program, or take them collectively as part of an accredited high school program or accredited middle school program which allows you to complete a whole grade level and ultimately earn a high school diploma at home.  Just as paczki come in many flavors, so do our courses.  We offer courses in traditional subject areas like English, math, science and social studies, as well as speciality areas such as career, fine arts and world language.  We offer something for everyone, so enroll today!

American School Banner on Display in Lansing

American School is proud to participate a street banner program organized by the town of Lansing, Illinois, where we have been headquartered for more than two decades.  Our banner appears on Torrence Avenue on the far south side of town near a busy bakery.  Be careful driving on that busy stretch of road, but be sure to look for our banner on the east side of the street.  You'll see our seal on the bottom of the banner, and that seal represents one of the best distance education high schools and middle schools anywhere in the world.  We just happen to have our offices in Chicagoland, but students in all 50 states and more than 65 countries take our online high school courses, correspondence high school courses and online middle school courses.  You can join them by enrolling today!

Reminder About Requesting Phone Calls

We're happy to make outbound phone calls to prospective students and parents who want to learn more about our online high school diploma program, online high school courses, correspondence high school diploma program, accredited middle school program or online middle school courses.  When you fill out the form to request a call, though, we ask that you give us a working phone number and/or a number at which we can leave a voicemail in case we don't reach you when you ask us to call you.  We appreciate your interest and want to provide you with outstanding service right from the moment you hear about us.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Today’s Special Occasion: Digital Learning Day

Today is Digital Learning Day, so it's the perfect opportunity for us to tell you about the many ways our students learn digitally.  Some enroll in our online high school diploma program, which consists entirely of online high school courses.  Others take accredited high school courses online on an individual basis, sometimes as part of an independent study high school program for credit recovery and other times to enrich an existing homeschool program.  Finally, some students take online middle school courses through our accredited middle school program.  Visit our online learning page to learn more!

American School to Attend Texas Homeschool Convention

American School will attend the Texas Homeschool Convention from February 23-25 at the Fort Worth Convention Center.  Visit us in booth 604 on February 23 from 6-9 p.m.; February 24 from 9:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m.; and February 25 from 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.  We'll have plenty of information about our accredited high school courses and middle school courses as well as plenty of our famous promotional items.  Homeschoolers can take our courses collectively as part of an accredited high school program or accredited middle school program, or they may take them individually to enrich an existing homeschooling program.  We always enjoy visiting Texas and meeting residents of the Lone Star State, and we're confident this will be another great convention.  Come see us!

American School to Attend WSCA Conference

American School will exhibit at the WSCA Conference from February 21-23 in Madison, Wisconsin.  We will be at table 7 in the Grand Terrace at the Hilton Monona Terrace from 4- 6 p.m. on February 21; from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. on February 22; and from 8-11 a.m. on February 23.  We're excited to meet school counselors from our neighbors to the north and will be promoting our independent study high school programs and accredited middle school program.  Counselors use our independent study high school courses and middle school courses for credit recovery or enrichment.  If a student needs one course to advance to the next grade or graduate, we'd be happy to assist him or her, and these conferences help us serve more students.  Check back very soon to learn where else we're headed in February!

Remembering Mary E. McKeown

Late last week, American School received word that Mary E. McKeown passed away.  Mary devoted her entire adult life to American School and our students and held a variety of responsbilities during her 75 years of service.  Those roles included instructor, study guide author, principal, educational director, executive vice-president and, finally, trustee, a position she still held at the time of her death.  At last year's annual meeting, American School's trustees and corporate members unanimously voted to rename our library as the Mary E. McKeown Library, and Mary was thrilled to receive a duplicate of the plaque that now resides in the library that bears her name.  It is quite possible that no American School employee has helped–or will ever help–more students than Mary did.  Those of us who knew her and worked with her are grateful to have had her influence our lives and work.  We'd also be remiss if we didn't mention how happy we were for her that she lived to see her beloved Chicago Cubs win the World Series last year.  Please keep Mary and her family and friends in your thoughts in the coming days.  She leaves a legacy that is unmatched.

American School Closed February 20

American School will be closed Monday, February 20, in observance of Presidents' Day.  We will reopen with regular business hours on Tuesday, February 21.  Whether you have a three-day weekend or not, we invite you to take a look at our online high school diploma program, accredited high school program consisting of paper-based courses, or our accredited middle school program also consisting of online courses.  We're confident you'll find the high school correspondence courses, online high school courses or online middle school courses that you need, and if you do, we invite you to enroll and become our student.  We'd be happy to serve you.

Important Information About Our Emails

Late last week and early this week, American School had difficulty with its email server and spam filter.  The good news is that the problems have been solved, but because of these difficulties, emails sent to us between February 10-13 may not have reached their intended recipient.  We apologize for this error but remain ready to assist you with your online high school courses, high school correspondence courses, online middle school courses, or numerous other services.  If you have copies of those emails in your sent folder, please resend them to us, or send us an entirely new email.  We will reply as quickly as possible.  Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Today’s Anniversary: St. Louis

It's February 15, and the city of St. Louis, Missouri was founded on this date all the way back in 1764.  Its most famous landmark, the Gateway Arch, didn't arrive until more than 200 years later and is the tallest man-made structure west of the Mississippi River.  You can think of American School as your gateway to a better life.  Our online high school diploma program or correspondence high school diploma program will allow you to get jobs that you couldn't obtain without sufficient education.  If you're not ready for high school, our accredited middle school program can serve as a gateway to grades 9-12.  Currently it consists of online middle school courses, but we will have a paper-based middle school program available later this year.  We look forward to promoting all of our offerings at a convention in St. Louis later this year, but that won't be our first convention this year.  We have a couple coming up next week, so check back soon to see where we're headed first in 2017!
