Today’s Special Occasion: Boss’s Day

It's October 16, and today is Boss's Day.  The first boss of American School was R.T. Miller.  He founded American School in 1897 and remained with us until 1945.  Since that time, only a few people have followed in R.T. Miller's footsteps and become American School President.  Valerie Riley currently holds that office, and she, like all American School employees, are dedicated to offering our students the best accredited paper-based and online high school courses and paper-based and online middle school courses.  Take them individually for enrichment or through our independent study programs, or take them collectively and earn a high school diploma at home.  Valerie and the rest of us are happy to serve you!

Today’s Birthday: Marie Osmond

It's October 13, and entertainer and former American School student Marie Osmond turns 58 years old today.  She's one of many famous people who have taken high school correspondence courses with us, but whether you take those or our newer online high school courses and online middle school courses, we promise to treat you like a celebrity.  You'll get outstanding service from the moment you enroll until after you complete your studies.  Visit our Community page to learn about some of our other famous students.  Perhaps you'll be on that list someday!

NACAC Hosts Chicago National College Fair

The National Assocation for College Admission Counseling will host the Chicago National College Fair this Saturday, October 14, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in McCormick Place's Hall C1-North Building.  Students who earn a high school diploma at home with American School often go on to attend many prestigious schools, but sometimes finding the right school can be challenging.  The NACAC College Fair is a great opportunity for students in our college preparatory program to meet with representatives from colleges and universities across the country and find the school that is best for them.  We encourage our students to attend this event or a similar college fair in a town near you.

Today’s Birthday: Eleanor Roosevelt

It's October 11, and Eleanor Roosevelt was born on this date in 1884.  She is the longest serving First Lady, having served in that role for the 12 years Franklin D. Roosevelt was President of the United States, and is equally well-known as an advocate for human rights.  Eleanor's early years were filled with sadness and difficulty, yet she went on to become one of history's most prominent women.  If you've had a difficult childhood, don't despair.  Taking our online middle school courses, online high school courses or high school correspondence courses can help you achieve a better life.  We've been one of the leading distance education high schools since the time Eleanor's uncle Teddy Roosevelt was President of the United States, and we're still going strong today.  We look forward to serving you after you enroll and become our student.

Today’s Anniversary: The Great Chicago Fire

It's October 10, and on this date in 1871, the Great Chicago Fire was finally extinguished after burning since the evening of October 8.  Nearly the whole city was destroyed, but at least two of the buildings that survived the fire are still standing on Michigan Avenue downtown.  In the 146 years since, the world has evolved in so many ways, set in many ways we remain powerless against natural disasters such as fires, hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes.  If you are taking our accredited high school courses or are a student in our accredited middle school program and have been affected by a natural disaster, please let us know.  We are ready to support you in every way we can.

Today’s Anniversary: Sputnik
