| Profile
of an Independent Study Student:
Make-Up
Work: The student who has failed a subject can make it up during the school year or
during summer vacation.
The Bright Student: The accelerated student can take subjects
like Oceanography, Physics, and Advanced Algebra.
The Potential Drop-Out: The potential dropout may be motivated
if he or she can take a subject that meets his or her particular interests and needs.
The Home-bound Student: If a student is forced by illness or
other reasons to withdraw from the classroom, studies can continue through home study
during the absence.
Those Who Travel: Children of missionaries, businessmen,
entertainers, sports figures, and others who travel can take correspondence courses to
keep up with their classes regardless of where these students may be.
Career Education: Students can be offered "career
exploratory" courses such as Journalism and Medical Secretary and "skill
training" courses like Blueprint Reading for Building Trades I and 11.
Summer School: An alternative strategy for summer school.
Students can keep up with their classes by taking "summer school" at home
through correspondence.
CONTINUING AND ADULT EDUCATION
Adult education administrators use Independent Study programs to help
them meet the needs of more adults in their communities. An ongoing Independent Study program enables a school to expand its
curricula and offer subjects to the public which would not have been possible to offer
before.
Students who need special interest subjects are accommodated as well as
those who re-quire traditional studies to earn a high school diploma.
If ever you have had to cancel a class because there were too few
people enrolled, you'll appreciate the value of a system whose viability does not depend
upon the number of students registered. For instance, a class of one-an economic
impossibility under ordinary conditions-now is normal practice with Independent Study.
What is more, efficient use of plant space is maximized when classes of
ten, twenty, or even thirty students are studying as many different subjects in the same
room.
American School's Independent Study program is a proven way to help your school and to
serve your community better.
