Today’s Special Occasion: The State of the Union

It's January 12, and tonight President Obama will give his last State of the Union address.  American School does not take political positions, but tonight's speech is worth discussing from two standpoints.  First, it's a speech, so students in our online Public Speaking course or in our paper-based Speech course can watch it and perhaps pick up a few pointers to help them in their studies.  Second, the State of the Union is our government in action, so students in our online Government course or in our paper-based Social Civics course can watch it and learn more about how our government operates.  If you tune in at 8 p.m. Chicago time, you'll see President Obama walk into the House of Representatives, where Vice-President Biden (who presides over the Senate) and Speaker of the House Ryan will be waiting for him along with the entire 535 members of Congress.  You'll see Supreme Court justices there as well as many members of President Obama's cabinet.  As a fun challenge for yourself, try to identify the cabinet member who is not present.  Various broadcasts may identify the cabinet member who is not present, but a cabinet member always is absent and watches the speech from a secure location in case of a disaster at the Capitol.  We hope you can tune in tonight for at least part of the speech to learn more about speech, government and the state of our country at the present moment.

Today’s Birthday: Johnny Carson

It's October 23, and the late Johnny Carson was born on this date in 1925.  He revolutionized late-night television by hosting The Tonight Show for 30 years from 1962-1992.  Today some of his most memorable interviews, monologues and sketches have been compiled into a popluar series of DVDs.  Even though most of our students weren't even born yet when he retired, we're guessing that they would find these clips just as amusing as their parents or grandparents did when they originally aired.  At the beginning of every show, sidekick Ed McMahon would introduce the host by saying "Heeeeere's Johnny!" so today is a good opportunity to say "Heeeeere's what you'll receive after you enroll and become our student".  You'll get accredited high school courses in online or paper-based formats, whichever one is your preferred method of learning.  You can even do online exams in many of our paper-based courses.  You'll get caring student service and assistance whenever you need it.  You'll get low tuition and a monthly payment program.  You'll get credit for courses completed at another accredited high school.  Finally, you'll get the ability to work when and where it's convenient for you.  That means if you want to work during the day, you can, but if you want to work while Johnny Carson's successors are on late-night television you can do that instead.  You don't need to be Carnac the Magnificent to see that American School offers the accredited high school courses you need at a cost you can afford!  Enroll today!

Today’s Birthday: Barack Obama

It's August 4, and President Barack Obama turns 54 years old today.  American School doesn't affiliate with any particular party or politician, but we mention President Obama on his birthday for a couple reasons.  First, you can learn about the presidency by taking our Social Civics (Government) and United States History courses.  Both are available in online and paper-based formats.  Second, you might be aware that President Obama is the 44th President of the United States since the office was established in 1789.  American School was established in 1897 and yet we've only had seven presidents.  Term limits for Presidents of the United States have something to do with that, but the fact that we've had only seven presidents in 118 years of service is testimony to the solid leadership we've had over the years.  Enroll today and be confident you're earning your accredited high school diploma from one of the longtime leaders in distance education!

Today’s Anniversary: The Battle of Waterloo

It's June 18, and the famous Battle of Waterloo took place 200 years ago today.  Because the battle marked the end of Napoleon's once-insurmountable power, today the term "waterloo" can refer to anything that causes someone's demise.  Not having a high school diploma should never be your waterloo.  We offer online and paper-based programs if you desire to earn our accredited diploma, and we make individual courses available if you need to recover credit or wish to enhance an existing homeschool program.  Go on the offensive and enroll today!

Today’s Special Occasion: The Stanley Cup

It's June 16 and last night the Chicago Blackhawks won their third Stanley Cup in six years, making many American School employees very happy in the process.  The Stanley Cup is perhaps the most revered trophy in all of sports, in part because the names of each player are engraved on it for posterity.  At American School, we're looking forward to putting your name on something even more important than the Stanley Cup, namely your accredited high school diploma.  We have a wide variety of online and paper-based courses and diploma programs to fill every need.  Enroll today and let us help you achieve your one goal of becoming a high school graduate!

National Geographic Bee Held in Washington, D.C.

We're abuzz with bees this week as two national bees were held or are being held in and around Washington, D.C.  The first is the National Geographic Bee, which was held last week and is being broadcast on PBS affiliates around the country.  We invite you to tune in and match wits with some of the brightest young minds in the nation, and if you yourself want to learn more about Geography, consider taking our online Geography course or our paper-based World Geography course.  We can't guarantee you'll win the National Geographic Bee, but we can guarantee you'll become more informed on the countries of the world and be one step closer to your accredited high school diploma.

This Weekend’s Special Occasion: College Graduation

This weekend many colleges and universities around the country will be holding commencement ceremonies, and so today is a good time to remind you of some things we offer to help prepare you for college.  We recommend Method Test Prep if you need extra help in preparing for your college entrance exam.  More information may be found on our ACT-SAT Prep page.  As you begin to think about where you want to attend college and eventually begin applying to different universities, remember that our school counselor can answer any questions you have about the college admissions process, including the financial aid process.  Guidance Department contact information may be found in the Online Student Center.  Finally, we are happy to award post-secondary scholarships to 18 deserving graduates each year.  We'll be determining this year's winners soon, and you'll read about them and their future plans in a future blog and All American newsletter.
