As you know, the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation changes frequently.  We have created a specific web page to address the situation while continuing to update our blog and social media pages as best we can.  Please visit www.americanschool.org/covid-19 for all of our statements with the most recent one at the top and others following in chronological order.

At this time, American School remains closed to the public.  Only American School staff members are allowed in the building.  Several staff members are working at home, but the ones who are in the building are practicing social distancing, washing their hands frequently, and doing their best to stay healthy.

In addition, the State of Illinois has issued a shelter-in-place policy until April 7.  As of this blog, we do not know if this policy applies to us.  We will update you as soon as possible.

The following information applies to all students:

If students are enrolled in a print course but wish to switch to online exams, please send an email to instructiondept@americanschool.org.  You can switch to online exams at any point in your course and pick up right where you left off.  As usual, remember to put your full name, student number, and the course(s) in which you wish to take online exams.  A list of courses with online exams available is here.  If a course has a computer symbol next to it, it has an online exam option.  In addition, online exams are available for Introduction to Business (2018 version) and Office Procedures (2016 version) and Physics (2010 version).  Online exams are not available for Physics (2019 version) and any print middle school courses.

In addition, most print courses have a corresponding online version.  If students have not yet begun a course and have not had study materials sent to them, students can switch from the print version to the online version at no charge.  If you have study materials in a new, unused condition, have not started the course, and would like to make the change to the online course, please send an email to studentservice@americanschool.org.

All requests to switch over to online exams or online courses must be done in writing via email or letter.  Each student record will be evaluated and the student will receive a response within 1-2 business days.

The following information applies to students in our independent study high school program whose schools may not reopen for some time:

If students are in GradPoint courses with final exam requirements and and cannot take their final exam before the end of their enrollment period, American School will allow them access to take the final exam whenever their local school reopens, provided students have completed all other required coursework and the school reopens by July.

If students are in Edmentum courses with final exam requirements and cannot take their final exam before the end of their enrollment period, American School will allow them access to take the final exam whenever their local school reopens, provided students have completed all other required coursework.

If students are in a full-credit Edmentum course and completes all other coursework in the first semester section, American School will activate the second semester section even if the first semester final exam has not been taken.  Once their school reopens, American School will ensure them access to both the first semester and second semester final exams.

Thank you for making American School your distance education high school or middle school.  We appreciate the opportunity to serve you and hope you and your family stay healthy.

March 13, 2020

In light of more recent concerns regarding the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), American School is taking the following steps to ensure our students and employees stay healthy.

Since American School is a distance learning school offering online middle school courses, middle school correspondence courses, online high school courses and high school correspondence courses with a staff of fewer than 250 people in a large two-story building, we plan to remain open with regular business hours at this time.

That said, effective Friday, March 13, only American School employees and other authorized guests will be allowed inside our building, and all large deliveries should go directly to our Shipping Department in the back of the building rather than to our main entrance.  We expect this policy to remain in effect through the close of business on Friday, March 27, though American School reserves the right to amend this policy as we see fit.  No students, parents or friends or family members of American School employees will be allowed inside our building during this time.

If you are a student or parent and wish to enroll, pick up course materials or other documents, or make a payment in person, please call us at 708-418-2800, email us, or leave information in the white secure lockbox outside our main entrance.  Please include the student’s full name, his or her student number (if student is already enrolled), mailing address, email address and phone number when making your request.  Your request will be processed as quickly as possible, and an American School staff member will reach out to you via phone or email if we have questions about your request.  You may also continue to call or email us and expect a reply within one business day.

American School also is scheduled to attend eight conventions across the country in the next 60 days.  We are monitoring each convention carefully and will continue to put our employees’ health first in making our decision to attend or not attend if particular conventions plan to proceed as scheduled.

Should anything change regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19), American School will make additional information available.  In the meantime, we encourage everyone to practice good hygiene practices on a continuous basis.  The health and safety of our employees and students is of the utmost concern to American School management.  We value our employees and appreciate the opportunity to serve our students.  Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

March 11, 2020

At this time, it is business as usual for American School.  We have a generous sick policy that encourages employees to stay home when they do not feel well.  For our employees who are in the building, we remind them of good hygiene practices on a continuous basis.  We care about our employees' health, and we care about our students' health as well.  Our online middle school courses, middle school correspondence courses, online high school courses and high school correspondence courses can be done at your own pace.  If you're sick, you don't have to worry about falling behind because you're working in a classroom of one and can set your own schedule.  We do ask, however, that any exams on paper that you send to us not be soiled.  If we do receive a soiled exam, we will likely send it back to you, which will delay the grading process.  As a company we have several convention appearances scheduled this spring, and those remain as scheduled at this time.  Should anything change regarding the coronavirus, we will post additional information.  In the meantime, please accept our best wishes for your health and our appreciation for allowing us to serve you.
