The Hobbit Movie Premieres

It's December 14, and a movie adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit is now showing in theatres.  The premiere of the movie struck a chord with members of the American School's Curriculum department because the book version of The Hobbit is included in our Classic Adventure Literature course. The movie version gives students a unique opportunity to compare what they see on the silver screen to what they read in the course. It is important to remember that seeing the movie is not a substitute for reading the book, especially since there are often differences in film adaptations of literature. Rather, use the movie to your benefit. Were there things that surprised you? Did characters look the way you pictured them in your mind? Were there things in the book that were missing from the movie? Whether you are in Classic Adventure Literature now and plan to see the movie when it comes out or whether you see the movie and then decide to take Classic Adventure Literature, don't miss out on this chance to see and read (or read and see) The Hobbit. You'll be glad you did.
