Today’s Birthday: Peter Mark Roget

It's January 18, and Peter Mark Roget was born on this date in 1779.  Roget compiled the first thesaurus, and if you don't have a thesaurus in your possession, we recommend you get one.  A thesaurus can be a great resource to you as you work on English courses in your accredited middle school program or accredited high school program.  Once you start using a thesaurus and finding synonyms for words you use over and over again, your writing will improve, and you'll likely get higher grades in your online middle school courses and online high school courses.  All of us want you to succeed, and we're happy to share tips that will help you do your best and earn a high school diploma at home.

First Blog of 2018

It's January 2, and this is our first blog of 2018.  What's in store for American School in the new year?  Plenty.  We'll be introducing paper-based middle school courses to complement the online middle school courses already in our accredited middle school program.  Our accredited high school program will see some changes too as we plan to offer students more flexibility in choosing high school correspondence courses and online high school courses as they work to earn a high school diploma at home.  One thing that won't change is our commitment to offering outstanding curriculum at an affordable cost.  We're looking forward to a great year and encourage you to get your year off to a flying start by enrolling with us today!

American School Closed January 1

American School will be closed Monday, January 1, and reopen on Tuesday, January 2.  As we look back on the past year and look ahead to the new year, one constant is our gratitude toward our students.  We're grateful you have chosen to earn a high school diploma at home with us or take independent study high school courses or be part of our accredited middle school program.  We look forward to making 2018 the best year yet, so if you're not our student already, start your new year off right by enrolling today!

Today’s Anniversary: Iowa

It's December 28, and Iowa became a state on this date in 1846.  We have students in all 50 states and attend conventions in many states around the country each year, but to our knowledge, we've never attended a convention in the Hawkeye State.  Will that change in 2018?  You'll have to wait and see.  We've been busy finalizing our 2018 convention schedule which begins in February, and we'll share details soon.  We enjoy traveling and introducing people to our online high school diploma program, correspondence high school diploma program and independent study high school program.  We also like sharing news about our accredited middle school program which will expand in 2018.  Hopefully you can join us next year at a convention.  We'd love to meet you and help you or a family member get enrolled with American School!

American School at 120 (Part 3)

As we continue to celebrate our 120th anniversary, it's worth mentioning some of the educational organizations which we founded or with which we have been members over the years, as well as an example of how we help our students after they've graduated.  We were a charter member of the National Home Study Council.  We helped members of the United States Military during World War 2.  When the North Central Association accredited us, we became the first private home study high school to earn accreditation by a regional accrediting body.  When the Illinois State Board of Education recognized us, we became the first home-study school to receive such recognition.  We mention these organizations not to pat ourselves on the back but to give our students the comfort of knowing they are enrolled in an accredited high school program or accredited middle school program.  We take our accreditations and recognitions very seriously.  We also take our scholarship program seriously.  We've awarded scholarships to those who have earned our correspondence high school diploma or online high school diploma each year since 1938, and the scholarship meeting is one of the highlights of our year.  Check back tomorrow for more highlights of American School's 120 years of service!

State of Illinois Begins Bicentennial Celebration

This week our home state of Illinois began its bicentennial celebration.  We've been pleased to call Illinois our home for more than half of those 200 years, but we're just as happy to serve students in all 50 states and more than 65 countries around the world.  We've been a leading distance education high school for almost 120 years, and we're proud of our history too.  Be sure to read this blog next week for a series of reflections as we look back on 120 years of offering accredited high school courses, an accredited middle school program and much more!

Illinois Announces Statewide Poster and Poetry Contest

We love all of our students and all of our blog readers, but today's blog applies only to students who live in Illinois and are in 5th or 6th grade.  If you're in 6th grade of our accredited middle school program consisting of online middle school courses (and in 2018 paper-based middle school courses), keep reading!  The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is holding its annual Environmental Pathways poster and poetry/prose contest.  Click the link in this blog for more information.  We hope our eligible students will participate and are happy to share contests like this one with students in our distance education middle school and distance education high school programs.

Today’s Anniversary: San Jose

It's November 29, and city of San Jose was founded on this date in 1777.  We're excited to announce that we'll be visiting the San Jose area in 2018 to exhibit at a homeschool convention.  It'll be our first trip to that region, and we're looking forward to promoting our online high school diploma program, correspondence high school diploma program and accredited middle school program in northern California.  We're in the process of finalizing the rest of our 2018 convention schedule, and as usual we'll be promoting each of our appearances in this blog and on our Facebook and Twitter pages.  We look forward to visiting a city near you in 2018!

Today’s Special Occasion: Giving Tuesday

Today is Giving Tuesday, a day set aside for giving back during the holiday season.  This blog will not ask for your money, but it will remind you that American School is a non-profit institution.  That means that we put students’ educations above everything, including financial gain.  We keep the cost of our accredited high school program and accredited middle school program to a minimum without sacrificing the quality of our accredited high school courses and accredited online middle school courses.  Give yourself or someone you know a great education by enrolling today!
