Accreditations and Affiliations

Our home study courses, high school degrees, and distance education programs for working professionals and aspiring career professionals have helped us earn accreditation from several outside examining committees and accrediting bodies during our 120-year history. Our faculty, the quality of our courses and instructional materials, and the success of our students make American School what it is. See why American School takes pride in providing quality education to students any time, any place, and at their own pace.

American School is accredited by three reputable accrediting bodies.

One is the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools/Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools (MSA-CESS).  The Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools accredit early-childhood through post-secondary, non-degree granting public, private, faith-based educational institutions including special purpose schools, supplementary education centers, learning services providers, and distance education institutions.

American School is also accredited by Accreditation International (Ai) and the National Council for Private School Accreditation (NCPSA).  Accreditation by Ai and NCPSA means that the American School has met standards for:

  • defining appropriate educational goals and providing educational programs to achieve them;
  • maintaining a qualfied faculty and an effective school organization;
  • assessing outcomes of school experiences and controlling the quality of educational programs;
  • responding to the concerns of parents and needs of the school community;
  • providing for the continuity of its programs and planning for their future;
  • describing with accuracy the content of its services and programs;
  • developing plans and activities for continuous school improvement

American School is also recognized as a non-public secondary school by the Illinois State Board of Education. We are proud to have held this distinction since 1978, when we became the first home-study school to be recognized in this way.

2015 America's Promise Alliance logo

Recently American School expanded its presence within two national education programs. Our membership in the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) allows us to network with educators from across the country, and our partnership with America’s Promise Alliance helps ensure that all students have an opportunity to earn a high school diploma. In March 2011, we attended the Building a Grad Nation Summit, which was co-hosted by America’s Promise Alliance as a kickoff of their 10-year Grad Nation campaign. Prominent speakers included United States Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and former Florida governor Jeb Bush.

American School, Schools - Academic - Colleges & Universities, Lansing, IL Our 80-year affiliation with the Better Business Bureau of Chicago and Northern Illinois demonstrates our consistent efforts to give students and schools the best service we can, as well. Our A+ grade is the highest a business can receive under the BBB's new rating system, which replaces the previous 'satisfactory' or 'unsatisfactory' rating. Letter grades are calculated by computer using a ratings formula that takes into account 17 weighted factors, the largest single factor being the company's overall complaint history with the BBB. We are proud of our 80-year affiliation with the BBB and even prouder to receive this A+ rating.  View our listing here:
