It’s June 25, and Virginia became a state on this date in 1788. One of Virginia’s nicknames is “Mother of Presidents” because eight Presidents–George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor and Woodrow Wilson—were born there, and so today is an appropriate day to mention the eight people who have served as American School President. R.T. Miller founded American School in 1897 and served until 1945. He was succeeded by James McKinney, C.M. Elliott, W.K. Lasher, William Wright, William Hunding and Gary Masterton, and in 2017 Valerie Riley broke new ground by becoming the first female American School President. Each American School President experienced triumphs and faced challenges, but all of them put student needs first. For example, recent American School Presidents have catered to students’ needs by offering online high school courses and by introducing an accredited middle school program consisting of middle school correspondence courses or online middle school courses. Earlier American School Presidents, on the other hand, focused on high school correspondence courses and trade courses which were popular at the time. If you wish to experience student-centered learning, we invite you to enroll with American School. You’ll be part of a grand legacy of learning and all of us from President Riley on down would be happy to serve you!
