It’s May 1, and the Empire State Building opened on this date in 1931. It’s one of the most famous buildings in the world, and its anniversary got us thinking about the buildings we’ve called home over the years. Little is known about American School’s first headquarters in Boston or even our first building(s) after we moved to Chicago in the early 1900s. What we do know is that a four-story building on 58th and Drexel in Chicago became our home for nearly 90 years and is still a landmark today. It’s currently surrounded by modern medical facilities on the campus of the University of Chicago. One can only estimate the number of exams in paper-based high school courses that entered and exited that building over its nearly nine decades of occupancy. In 1996 we moved to our current facility in Lansing, Illinois, a south suburb of Chicago, and our current two-story building also includes a warehouse where we store books and study guides which are sent to students who take our middle school correspondence courses or high school correspondence courses. American School’s building is open to students and visitors by appointment only, so if you’re ever in the Chicago area and wish to visit us, please plan ahead. Thank you.
