American School is celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2022, but a big part of American School’s history is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Back in 1922, American School primarily served students who only studied at home. They could not attend a traditional school for a variety of reasons, and so American School’s high school courses helped fill that void. That same year, a man named Sidney Mitchell, who was the principal of Benton Harbor High School in Benton Harbor, Michigan approached American School leaders with an idea. He wanted to know if it was possible for students at Benton Harbor High School to take American School courses. American School leaders agreed that it was possible, and the independent study program was born. In the past 100 years, our independent study high school program has served thousands of students at thousands of high schools across the country. Many students use it for credit recovery, while others take accredited high school courses for enrichment or because of scheduling conflicts. We are happy to serve these students whether they live in Benton Harbor or far beyond, and we’d be happy to serve you too. Enroll today!
