Algebra can briefly be described as the study of mathematical symbols and the rules for manipulating these symbols.  It is considered the unifying thread of most of mathematics.  In this Algebra 1 course, students will be introduced to numerous mathematical concepts that they will use in future courses such as Geometry and Algebra 2.  Additionally, many algebraic concepts can be utilized in a variety of professions such as construction, music, scientific research, education, business, education, cooking, architecture and medicine.  The study guide is designed to help prepare students for exams by including additional examples that are explicitly applicable to this course.

Please note that students will need a graphing calculator for this course.  We recommend the TI-84 Plus by Texas Instruments, but any graphing calculator capable of graphing algebraic equations, plotting data points and performing regressions is acceptable.

Middle school students may enroll in Algebra 1 only with American School approval.
