Literature 3: Selected American Classics

This half–unit course allows students to explore in-depth several classics of American Literature: Willa Cather’s My Ántonia; Mark Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court; poetry by Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, Robert Frost, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Langston Hughes and others; and short stories by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, O. Henry, Stephen Crane, Washington Irving, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ambrose Bierce, Henry James, Herman Melville, Edgar Allan Poe and Philip K. Dick among others. Emphasis is on reading for enjoyment and understanding through an analysis of the structure and themes of each work. In addition, the study guides for these works stress the development of specific writing skills, including writing synopses and descriptive sentences. In completing this course, among other activities, students prepare a synopsis, paraphrase passages, identify techniques used in descriptive passages, identify the rhyme and rhythm schemes of poems, and write a critical essay.

There are 4 exams in Literature 3. Online Exams are available.
