Writing 1

Writing 1 is a full year course intended to improve students’ ability to use written English. In pursuit of this goal, Writing 1 combines the teaching of grammar basics and sentence and paragraph structure with a variety of writing assignments, such as descriptive, narrative, informative and persuasive essays, and a five-paragraph essay. In doing so, it exposes students to many examples of good writing, both fiction and nonfiction, of various levels of complexity and style by a wide variety of authors. It focuses on writing with coherence and unity; the importance of a topic sentence, and transition words.
