It’s May 20, and on this date in 1927, Charles Lindbergh took off from New York in an attempt to become the first person to fly nonstop solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Five years later in 1932, Amelia Earhart took off from Newfoundland in an attempt to become the first woman to fly nonstop solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Both trips were successful—Lindbergh landed safely in France and Earhart landed safely in Ireland—but one can imagine both pilots were nervous before taking off by themselves.
