It’s August 8, and on this date in 1988, the first night game at Wrigley Field was scheduled to be played. The home of the Chicago Cubs was famous for not having lights and playing only day games during the first 74 years of its existence, but ultimately lights were added and the Cubs attempted to play the first night game at Wrigley Field 35 years ago today. Mother Nature, however, had other ideas, and the game was rained out. The first official night game was played the following day, with the Cubs defeating the New York Mets by a score of 6-4. When we at American School think of the Chicago Cubs, one name in particular comes to mind. Mary McKeown served American School for 75 years in various capacities, and one could say that, outside her family, the only thing she loved more than American School was the Chicago Cubs. Several years ago we named our library after her, and inside the library is a sign honoring the Cubs’ three World Series titles, the most recent one coming in 2016 just months before Mary died. Over the years she had a profound impact on American School and our students, including writing several math courses that were mainstays of our correspondence high school diploma program. We are proud to have Mary McKeown as part of our American School family, and all of our dedicated employees want to have you as part of our family too.
