It’s February 23, and R.T. Miller was born on this date in 1867. His full name is Romanta Tillotson Miller, Jr., but to American School, R.T. Miller will always be our founder. In the 1890s, he and a group of his friends from the Boston area saw a need amongst the people for quality courses which may be completed at home. Many people at that time had to work during the day to support their families or were too old to attend school in a traditional setting. In particular, R.T. Miller and his colleagues focused on vocational courses such as electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, machine shop practice and mechanical drafting. Those courses were among the very first courses offered by American School when it opened in 1897, and we are proud to say that we offer business, technical and career education courses such as those among our accredited high school courses. Back then, of course, American School only offered high school correspondence courses, but in recent years American School began offering online high school courses and launched an accredited middle school program. Perhaps R.T. Miller would’ve been surprised to see us offering those things, but perhaps not. He was a visionary who was ahead of the curve on educational matters. He couldn’t have founded American School without being one. We remember him fondly on his birthday.
