It’s August 26, and Will Shortz turns 73 years old today. He is the crossword editor for the New York Times, and we mention his birthday today for two reasons. First, his degree from Indiana University is in enigmatology, which is the study of puzzles. To date, he is the only person to earn a degree in this field. This might be significant for you as you consider what your next steps are after you earn your accredited high school diploma. If you’re unsure of a major, perhaps a college or university will work with you to create a specialized academic path. Second, doing crossword puzzles and other word games can be a great way to expand your problem-solving skills, expand your vocabulary and get you more comfortable with using words in essays or in conversation. These are great skills to have while you do middle school at home or high school at home, and these skills will be very beneficial to you as you enter adulthood. Don’t sell yourself short. Continue to reach for your academic and personal goals on a daily basis!
